The greatest fish-stock treason? By Cathleen Kneen
From Wednesday's Globe and Mail The Harper Conservatives' announcement of a timely and critically important judicial inquiry into the state of Pacific salmon stocks was greeted with enthusiasm and relief by all those who remember what happened to the northern cod in the Atlantic. Now we are told they did so in an effort to reduce the appeal of the NDP candidate in the New Westminster-Coquitlam by-election (Tories Retake Former Nova Scotia Stronghold - Nov. 10). This is worse than typical behaviour for this government. It is what, in T.S. Eliot's Murder in the Cathedral, is described as "the greatest treason: to do the right thing for the wrong reason."
