Window to Return to IndexOttawa Grans at Carleton Job Fair for Counter Recruitment By Grannie Jo On Wednesday, Jan. 31 there was a job fair at Carleton University. The military recruiters were there and so were the Ottawa Raging Grannies! We came armed with a great song by Grannie Pat and with leaflets for potential recruits, telling them to think before they sign anything. The job fair was crowded, but not the recruitment table.
The military
personnel greeted us cordially, probably as relief from boredom. We
sent Grannies Ria and Alma
up to the recruiters to ask questions and
provide lectures on the evils of war, particularly the war in
Afghanistan.Grannies Jeannette, Jo Anne, Jo, Rosalie, and Granny-in-Training Shannon mingled with the crowd, handing out leaflets, and breaking into frequent song. In terms of lessons learned, the job fair was an excellent place to take action due to the large number of students present. (We had checked out the Recruiting Centre downtown, and it was not busy.) We had anticipated filling out application forms as a way of keeping the recruiters occupied, but they do not hand out forms at these events. They hand out CDs for you to print your own. Next time (and there will be a next time!) we will come armed with our own forms. Thanks to Shannon, you can see lots more photos of the gig here COMMENT:
