BMD and Canadian Sovereignty - December 05, 2004See also: Damn, Damn, Damn (Nov. 3/04) on this page Good advice from Grannie Alma: I feel that RIGHT NOW our efforts must be directed toward the immediate threat to Canada - Martin's propensity to drag Canada into Bush's Star Wars. I say this because I'm certain that this would be but the start of so-called "Deep Integration" with the US which would inevitably lead to an integrating of our environmental policies, a weaking respect for Civil Liberties in Canada, and pressure from the US to allow them to take our water and any other natural resources they want. We would make ourselves a willing "junior partner" always ready to obey orders. The issue is bigger than water or beef or softwood lumber. The issue is keeping this OUR CANADA, Please write your letter to Paul Martin. Here's a copy of mine below: ==================== To Prime Minister Paul Martin: Mr. Prime Minister I'm writing out of real fear that since the George Bush visit you are allowing yourself - and hence Canada - to be dragged into his Missile programme, despite the fact that CANADIANS increasingly oppose it. Mr, Prime Minister, we're a democratic country where citizens vote for politicians they can trust. If you pull us into this Missile plan in complete disregard of the wishes of most Canadians, you show contempt for what Canadians say. You are presently in a minority position, with a new election not too far in the future. Rest assured that if you betray us you will feel the result that election. Trudeau, MacKenzie King, Pearson should be your models - NOT the sycophantic Brian Mulroney, who was defeated so badly in part because he was so sycophantically close to the USA. Mr. Prime Minister, I hope that you will think carefully of the warnings about this project that have been issued by both scientists and military men, all of whom warn that it cannot work. I hope, too, that you are serious about keeping Canada OUT OF WEAPONIZING SPACE, a future which the Pentagon clearly has in mind. We know that Bush believes in pre-emptive wars with disastrous consequences as we see in Iraq. We can be thankful that Canada was unwilling to be a partner in this shameful endeavour. But the US under Bush/Cheney now have their sights on Iran and may very well start a war there. Will you be able to keep Canada out of such an act if you encourage "Deep Integration" with the US? Do you really believe, Mr. Prime Minister, that Canada's little voice will be heard - or even listened to - by those who KNOW that their orders come from God? I hope, Mr. Prime Minister, that you will be guided by self respect and loyalty to Canada, and not allow yourself to succumb to pressure from the bully to the south.
