Making Poverty History

Ottawa Raging Grannies

Well for once Greenie and  Ragegran are speaking with one voice. Where were we  Grannies when there was all this hoopla about free rock concerts to pressure the G 8'ers into dealing with poverty in Africa? Some of us might have been at the free concerts, but usually we do our own things about issues that matter to us.  Well, we didn't DO anything (did anyone besides us two wear a white MAKE POVERTY HISTORY bracelet?)

Seems strange that we were so silent. Maybe Africa is too far away?  Maybe Africans just aren't on our radar?  Or maybe fighting poverty in Africa just isn't as sexy as lampooning Bush and his wars.  Grannies started out as a Peace group, so that could account for our enthusiastic support for anti war protests. We're still a Peace group --- but Peace is badly threatened by Poverty. So fighting poverty helps the cause of Peace.  And in any case, fighting poverty  is something else Grannies do. So why the silence now????

Dunno.  But we do know that every 3 seconds an African child dies from some preventable disease or malnutrition.  Who is the target?  US.  Our apathy.

One one hundred, two one hundred, three one hundred ------  another child gone.

Greenie and Ragegran urging Grannies to  make fighting poverty a priority.
