Make Poverty History Rally

Alma October 16, 2007
By Granny Alma

On Tuesday Oct. 16  7 Grannies joined with a few hundred others on Parliament Hill as part of an international day to STAND UP and MAKE POVERTY HISTORY

Make Poverty HistoryThis rally one of two International Days  for the Eradication of poverty, was part of an world wide UN Millenium Campaign aimed  at  reminding governments of their  goal of Making poverty History by the year 2015.  This noble goal , set at the millennium summit in 2000,   is  far from realization. Rich countries like Canada, as was evident from the number of placards about  our own First Nations Poverty has yet to deal with Third World conditions here at home.

The few speeches – by Maude Barlow and Phil Fontaine of the AFN among others – were short but pointed, reminding us that Poverty will only be ended when  it’s eradication becomes government policy.

The seven Grannies standing on the steps holding our banner  POVERTY IS A GOVERNMENT POLICY left no doubt of where responsibility lies: In addition to  Jo, Alma , Tudy and Rosalie, we were joined by 3 new Grannies: Cathleen, Bessa and Lisa, which helped us to belt our songs with even greater effect, to the  usual delight and appreciation of the crowd.  More pictures by Jennifer Pedersen.

SONGS:

Making Poverty History

Tune:  Clementine.

We need housing, we need daycare
And a job that pays the cost
Let us end the need for food banks
Respect those who have been tossed.

Close the gap, it's getting wider
'Tween the rich folks and the not
No one should be an outsider
Raise the basic that we've got.

What a shame that in a country
That is rich as we are now
There are people who are hungry
Who can't make it anyhow.

Making poverty hist'ry
Is the way that we must go
How to do it's not a myst'ry
Let's get started, here we go!

Flaw in the System
(Tune: There's a Hole in the Bucket)

There’s a flaw in the system when a country is wealthy
And kid go to food banks
Just so they can eat.

It’s a lopsided system when rich folks get richer
And those at the bottom
Must live on the street.

On minimum wages it’s  pretty outrageous
That cold,leaky housing
Is where some  must sleep

There’s a flaw in the system and we’ve gotta fix it
 If Poverty’s sown
Trouble’s what we will reap.

There’s a flaw we can fix  it if  we really want to
Make poverty Histry
Wake up and take heed.
